Final Belonginess, with ten figures and bursts of colour arranged across a grid of doorways

Belonginess

Maria Hazanskaia

Maria imagines an apartment building she would choose to call home: a place shared with the artists who shaped her world. Nine painters appear alongside her own figure, while eruptions of colour move through the building like a shared creative energy.

A house made
of its people.

Warhol, Dalí, Vrubel, Picasso, Monet, van Gogh, Roerich, Klimt and Cézanne become Maria’s imagined neighbours. The familiar apartment block turns into a place of artistic belonging: the people who inhabit it give the building its meaning.

Beyond the doorway

Monet’s brush extends outside his own space. For Maria, the gesture represents a willingness to move beyond the artistic boundaries of one’s time.

A figure only partly seen

Van Gogh appears partially concealed and painted in a language that recalls his own. Maria uses this detail to express the distance between the artist’s inner world and the recognition he received during his lifetime.

The energy between them

The clouds of colour are Maria’s recurring image of creativity: a force that erupts from within and changes the world around it.
